The causes of the onset of atopic eczema, or atopic dermatitis, are multifactorial.

Atopic eczema is a skin disease that usually occurs in infants between 2 to 6 months and lasts longer or shorter. This skin condition may fade beyond 2-3 years.

The frequency of this disease has increased enormously in recent decades. It reaches 2 to 5% of children under 2 years. In some parts of the world, particularly in the United States, atopic dermatitis affects up to 50% of young children.
