Dysorthography: the symptoms

The symptoms of dysorthography are not just the excess of spelling mistakes. They generally reflect the child's difficulty in accurately transcribing what he sees or hears.

The symptoms of dysorthography occur when you spell words or write them. There are several symptoms, whose presence and intensity depend on the cause of the dysorthographia:

  • Phonological transcription disorders : confusion of similar sounds (margin / march), substitution of words (bicycle / bicycle), inversions of letters (example / exmeple), visual errors (family / fan), etc.
  • Grammatical difficulties
  • Difficulties in spelling : that is to say, difficulties in memorizing the spelling and cutting of words (today / today)

In addition, there are frequently other associated symptoms, such as slowness in writing, difficulty in acting as a dual task (such as writing and listening at the same time) or the child's fatigue during reading and reading tasks. writing, and at the end of a school day. Indeed, children with dysorthography, especially when they are associated with other dys, need to make significant efforts to follow up in class and provide the expected results.

Other symptoms can be found around reading, writing, or motor coordination, when dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia exist respectively. These diagnoses must in any case be sought, in case of suspicion of dysorthography.
