Anxiety: treatments

First, when the crisis of anxiety occurs, it is necessary to promote the appeasement by a calm environment.

Place the anguished person away from stimulation, lie down or sit down, and stay with her. Hold her hand, speak calmly, and help her breathe, breathing into a bag or practicing deep breathing, such as cardiac coherence.

If the state of anxiety does not give way, one can resort to anxiolytic treatments. These include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam or clonazepam. These anxiolytics have a double advantage: during the anxiety attack, they help to calm the symptoms, but, besides crises, the mere fact of knowing them at hand, has also an anxiolytic value! Neuroleptic treatments may also be indicated when the state of anxiety is massive and close to delirium.

However, these medications are to be used with moderation. They cause, in fact, a strong dependence. These treatments can only be prescribed for specific periods (8 to 12 weeks).

In the prevention of anxiety attacks, when they become chronic, the psychiatrist may prescribe antidepressant treatments such as SSRIs. Unlike anxiolytic treatments, they do not cause addiction and are active on anxiety. Caution: the abrupt cessation of anti-anxiety or anti-depressant treatment can provoke rebound effects: seizures are stronger than before. A withdrawal syndrome is also possible with dizziness or convulsions. This phenomenon may occur if the treatment has been taken for several weeks.

If anxiolytic drugs are active on the crisis, they are not enough to solve the problem of substance. A psychotherapeutic treatment is very often essential.

Unfortunately, too many people are not treated by these therapies. They are limited to take anxiolytics from time to time, without going beyond ... This is one of the reasons why there are recurrences of anxiety attacks, and why in France, we probably consume too many drugs psychotropics.
