Andropause: the causes

As menopause in women around the age of 50, when the cessation of hormonal activity of the ovaries leads to a cessation of menstruation and definitive sterility (accompanied in some women sleep problems, hot flashes, mood disorders ...) men see their testosterone levels decrease at the time of andropause.

The cause of andropause is a gradual decrease in testosterone.

We talk about andropause in humans when the presence of several clinical signs is related to the decrease of testosterone concentration in the blood.

The testosterone level defining a deficit is not clearly established. In any case, it is the measure of bioavailable testosterone blood concentration that best reflects an androgen deficiency.

The bioavailable testosterone is dosed in the blood, between 8 and 11 o'clock in the morning, but more towards 8 o'clock and will be possibly verified by a 2nd dosage.

In addition, it is necessary to compare the amount of testosterone to that which existed before the onset of andropause, that is to say before the age of 40 years. Indeed, testosterone levels are very variable from one man to another.

In combination with the reduction of testosterone levels in the blood, other hormonal changes (concerning DHEA - dehydroepiandrosterone, melatonin, thyroid hormones ...) could be among the causes of the occurrence of andropause.
