Today there are effective and well-tolerated treatments to relieve people with pollen allergy.
Antihistamine medications are associated with nasal sprays and eye drops as needed. It is important to continue the treatment for the duration of pollination to control the symptoms of allergy and so be able to go out and enjoy the beautiful days without fear.
These drugs also exist for children in pediatric forms.
Desensitization
When the discomfort becomes disabling or difficult to control, desensitization can treat the pollen allergy at its source.
It involves putting under the tongue every morning, small fractions of the pollen allergen responsible for the allergy in order to induce a tolerance of the immune system. This treatment starts a few months before the pollen period and continues during it.
The improvement is manifested in the first season of desensitization, and this treatment must be carried out during 3 successive seasons. The benefits persist when the treatment is stopped.
Our advices
Allergy to pollen is also treated by the application of some practical advice. Because it is difficult not to be exposed to plants when you leave home, here are simple tips that will allow people with allergies to avoid being overwhelmed by pollen and limit the inconvenience that this entails:
> Wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and face. You should also avoid rubbing your eyes or smoking, as tobacco aggravates allergic reactions.
> Wear a mask when gardening and avoid mowing the lawn, so that pollen does not come to rest on you and in the airways. You can have your garden maintained or ask a gardener or landscaper to advise you on which trees and plants produce the least amount of pollen.
> Also think of airing your room early in the morning when pollen is not yet in the air, and avoid drying your sheets outside during the pollen season.
> Consult pollen calendars (RNSA) to continue your treatments as long as pollen persists, their season varies from year to year due to weather conditions.
