Adult acne: treatments

In case of acne, it is recommended to consult a general practitioner or a dermatologist, so that he can offer you a suitable treatment.

Light and moderate acne will be treated with local treatments, while severe acne will be treated with oral medications, sometimes combined with local treatments.

> Local treatments (topical)

  • Local retinoids: they are used to treat some forms of acne. It must be applied once a day, in addition to a moisturizer. They facilitate the evacuation of the sebum and destroy the comedones.
  • Benzoyl peroxide (anti-acne preparation for local use): it is used for papulo-postulative acnes. It acts against the bacterial proliferation within the pilosebaceous follicle and is effective in acnes associating blackheads and inflammatory pimples.
Attention, because this treatment is photosensitizing, it is therefore necessary to use a sunscreen throughout the duration of treatment.
  • Local antibiotics: they are used in cases of localized papulopustular acnes. They are usually used in combination with a retinoid or with a local anti-acne preparation.

> Oral treatments

  • antibiotics: they are used for extended papulopustular acnes. Their action on the pilosebaceous follicle is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.
  • isotetrinoin is a very active medicine against acne, but requires specific precautions for use. It is indicated in cases of severe acne or when other treatments have not brought benefits. This medicine now exists in generic form. Because of the risk of fetal malformation, the prescription of this drug is very framed in young women. They are obliged to follow a contraception, to perform in addition every month a pregnancy test. And the duration of isotretinoin treatment in a woman is limited to one month (renewable).
